A rider, a horse, and a small embroidered crest became shorthand for an entire version of American life. Prep, country clubs, Sunday afternoons — an image of belonging that traveled far beyond the polo field. We grew up recognizing that language too. PANDA RIDERS starts by rewriting it
02 — CHANGE THE RIDE
We took one of the most familiar silhouettes in American clothing and changed the person inside it. In his place: a panda — unmistakably Chinese, instantly recognizable, and slightly out of place. That displacement is the point. What happens when a familiar icon suddenly starts looking a little more like us?
Pandas have been used to represent China so many times that they have almost become a cliché. Cute, harmless, printed across souvenirs and tourist T shirts around the world. Instead of running away from that familiarity, we wanted to take ownership of it. Sometimes reclaiming a cliché is more interesting than avoiding one.
PANDA RIDERS imagines a club that never existed — somewhere between Chinese identity and American prep. No history, no old money, no membership requirements. Just a borrowed uniform rewritten for a different group of people. A uniform for a club that never existed. Until now.
05 — MADE BETWEEN CULTURES
NUNCHUKX has never been interested in choosing between Chinese and American visual language. We grew up surrounded by both; both end up in the same clothes. PANDA RIDERS isn't about replacing one culture with another — it's about creating something in the space between them. Not East or West. Just ours.
